When I got up this morning, I threw on my robe and went out to the kitchen, Jeff was coming in the back door with something in his hands. He said "it's a hummingbird" ...well that is what I think he said, I didn't have my ears in...but anyway, he was holding a hummingbird, seems that two of them collided in mid-air. So I told him I would take some pictures of it.
Look how pretty the pink/purple color is on it's throat, and head, and it would look different whatever angle you were at.
Here it looks more red.
He seemed so fat and poofy. He flew off and that other hummingbird that he/she collided with came after him again, so he went to the ground, so I went back and picked him up. He still seemed groggy, and dizzy from the collision.
I was pretending he came from PA, perhaps even my BFF Tracy's yard and he flew here and was so tired, and the other hummingbird is one that lives here year round and did not want to share his yard.
He is so puffy, cause he has his winter coat on for that cold fly from PA.
I took some video, and it is so cool cause when he flutters his wings you can hear them, and they do hummmm....

So the other hummingbird kept hanging around, and Jeff said to take this little guy in the house. So I took him into the house, and Jeff went out to get some sugar water from their feeder, and look at this...I was amazed, and never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would ever feed a hummingbird. He was licking and licking and his tongue was so quick, finding every drop off my finger. I wished Tracy were here cause she loves hummingbirds more then I do. She would have definitely peed her pants!
Just ignore my talking, like I said I didn't have my ears in and Jeff had never used my camera before and I was making sure it was taking the picture, cause it is easy to think you are video taping and you are not. He did pretty good. How cool eh? Look at that tongue! Too funny, you can see my robe, it says Holland America Line. I demonstrated on one of the cruises, and Stampin' Up! gave me a monogrammed robe as a thank you, it was laying on my bed that night.
So after he ate, I held him a while longer, and then he flew off my hand in the house and went towards the light of the blind and sat there, and I thought he would get hurt, so I went and got him again, and took him out front so he was not by the one in the backyard.
Here he sits in the bush, he sat there a while, and then he got himself all flattened down, like you usually see them...not all puffy, and then he flew to another bush, and I went back in the house, when I came out later, he was gone. So I am gonna hope that he was all better, and will live a long life.

I just found your blog - and saw this on the humming bird - how lucky are you! I have held one before that was stuck on my screened porch but didn't get to feed him. I have a feeder just outside my kitchen window and watch them all the time. They are very territorial and we also have a dive bomber. They protect the feeder - we normally have about 3 each year trying to use one feeder - I think a pair belong together - one will eat while the other sits in the tree and dive bombs the third one. They are beautiful and amazing animals. In the spring I have pictures of all the birds that nest in my yard - I hope to have more this coming year. Thanks for sharing.

Diana, that is SO cool that you were able to hold a hummingbird!!! We have them here in SC, but I've never seen one up close and personal like that. How cute that he drank off your fingers!!! You are truly blessed to have experienced that. Thanks so much for sharing it in a video for us!!!

Diana, that is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I cannot believe you were actually holding a hummingbird! They are the most amazing little creatures when you see them, and they usually move so fast and dart about! Thank you for your kindness and also for videotaping your whole experience.

OMG,
I love hummingbirds and it was wonderful to see you caring for such a fabulous little guy. I couldn't wait to share the video with our son. I have noticed that they are generally not too afraid of people and this confirms it. Our hb's have moved on south for the winter and I miss them so much. Thanks for sharing your amazing experience with all of us.

Hi Di, Wonderful experience with the hummer, a Ruby Throat is the only one on the east coast. That was a male. They are quite territorial often fighting over who gets to drink at the feeder. Wanted to let you know, a female would be olive green above and buffy white below with no color on the throat.

This was soo cool! Joel thinks you should keep him and then bring him here for him to have as a pet! He likes birds too - I think you have seen the pictures of the bird he rescued from our cat that he called Digit.
The videos were soo cool and his little tongue flying out of there so fast! That was neat. and I could see that Toby just had to have a few seconds of camera time!!! I noticed your robe right away - in the first video!!!! I think the hummingbirds in AZ are bigger than the ones here. The ones that come to mom's feeder I don't think are that big.
This is cool - and right after Thanksgiving too!! So Mr./Mrs. Hummingbird for sure is thankful for you today!

Oh Diana!!! I could watch this all day!! How amazing!! I love when Toby runs across the patio too!!! He's a little streak of "Awe there goes Toby!!"
Yes Yes it could be my Henrettia or Jake from PA. We can totally pretend, guess because it has the Red on it's Throat it must be Jake!!! I can't wait to see him in January!!!
